Careful handling of wood is decisive for both the product quality and the success of Lagler Fenster & Türen GmbH. Even more important is a constant indoor climate in the storage and production halls. "Timber windows must have material moisture levels of 12 to 15 % when installed. Wherever water-based paints are used, high-quality air humidification systems have an extremely positive effect on people, materials and machines. The following article reveals what really matters.

The problems are best known in the car, aircraft and their supplier industries: Excessively dry air indoors causes dust, electrostatic charges as well as expensive rejects and annoying rework in surface technology. Due to the poor climatic conditions, the surface quality of the painted parts suffers and there is a delicate additional demand for material. At the same time, the performance of the workforce can fall noticeably. But there are other ways.

Efficient solutions
High-quality air humidification systems turn the tables completely and result in higher quality, productivity and energy efficiency. “The relative air humidity in the room is an essential success criterion and should lie constantly in the defined range, which often moves between 40 and 65% relative humidity. This is not only good for the surfaces, but also for the vitality of the employees,” points out Franz Schrems. The project manager for surface technology at the Upper Austrian air humidification specialist Merlin Technology talks plainly: “If there are problems in surface technology in winter that you don't have in summer, it's down to the “air humidity”.

Great differences

Several criteria play a role in choosing the right air humidification system . The differences in the market are considerable, especially in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. For example, Merlin Technology's patented Orbit Wing® high-pressure duct humidification system saves up to 95% energy compared with conventional electric steam generators. The system can be integrated into any existing or new ventilation and air conditioning system and achieves water and energy efficiency of 98 percent. “Only 2.5 watts of energy are used to generate 1 kilogram of moisture. Conventional electric steam generators require up to 750 watts to do this,” remarks Schrems, who points out another crucial criterion.

“The exact and individual regulation of the humidity in the individual zones is essential for optimum results in surface technology. Less space required
Modern systems humidify the air directly in the duct. The spatial requirements for this are challenging. Since aerosols require at least about 1.5 seconds evaporation time, an evaporation distance of almost four metres would be required at an air speed of 2.5 m/s in the duct. In many cases, this required space does not exist. Up to now, this problem could mostly only be solved with energy-intensive and cleaning-intensive systems. But now there is a new, innovative solution. With the Orbit Wing® System from Merlin Technology, patented wing elements ensure a defined turbulence at the tear-off edge. The aerosols fly in a circle and cover a longer airborne range at a shorter distance. The evaporation distance reduced by 50 percent saves a lot of space and is considered to be particularly hygienic

Hygiene in focus
Hygiene management should be given particular attention when selecting the air humidification system . Those who want to do something good for the environment rely on oil and maintenance-free hydraulic pumps that are ideally frequency-controlled and water-saving. Typical hygiene features include continuous water-bearing components made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel or food-safe plastics. Leading manufacturers also offer hygiene interval circuits and individual interfaces to building control systems.

Constant surface tension
A constant surface tension is achieved with constant air humidity. “The problems are diminishing and the yields are rising. High-quality air humidification systems thus also increase production and quality safety. In the automotive industry, they make a valuable contribution to possible zero runs,” says Schrems. To meet specific requirements on site, modular air humidification systems are recommended. Despite their flexibility, they are easy to install. The maintenance effort for modern systems is manageable and is even close to zero for some providers. We also recommend sophisticated air humidification systems that guarantee simple operation with all their features.

Less sick leave, more quality
High-quality air humidification systems reduce dust by up to 80% and significantly improve the indoor climatic conditions. This results in increased production speed, improved and consistent surface quality and less sick leave. In addition to this, air humidity influences people's perception of heat. If the room air is too dry, it must be warmed by about 1 to 2° C so that the person feels just as comfortable as with optimal humidity*). This is reflected considerably in the energy costs. Liebherr Aerospace manufactures systems for the aviation industry and focuses on quality. Because the paint systems used for chassis require a humidity of 40-70% for drying, air humidification is imperative. “Our air washers became more and more maintenance-intensive when it came to cleaning and contamination despite the use of biocides. Therefore we wanted a high-pressure humidification system without standing and circulating water. A hybrid version of Merlin Technology’s high pressure duct humidifier ORBIT WING® was installed at Porschehof Salzburg. This system addresses several issues simultaneously.

Up to 98 % evaporation efficiency*, up to 99 % electrical energy saving** compared to conventional steam humidification and 50 % reduced evaporation distance: even the standard version of the ORBIT WING® high pressure duct humidifier features some rather impressive key figures. Merlin Technology took this another step further for Porschehof Salzburg. A single pump station that is equipped with two nozzle holders (1 x incoming air, 1 x outgoing air) allows for air humidification and cooling via a single system. “In summer the outgoing air is cooled by means of adiabatic humidification and the incoming air is cooled indirectly via a rotation heat exchanger. An additional influx of moisture is therefore prevented, and we can achieve a very high cooling performance that would not be possible otherwise. Ideally pre-cooled air is therefore introduced into the building in summer, and in winter the air humidification system provides for a pleasant and healthy room climate," explains Franz Schrems, Technical Manager at Merlin Technology.

“I am really impressed with the system”
All offices of the extension building “D” at Porschehof Salzburg are now supplied with fresh air and professional-quality air humidification. Complaints by staff members about dry air are now a thing of the past. Horst Prodinger, project leader Building Technology with Porsche Immobilien GmbH is rather taken with the hybrid solution. “I am really impressed with the system. The technology by Merlin Technology allows for the humidification unit and the ventilation unit to be set up separately. The infrastructure for adiabatic cooling and for humidification in winter is the same, and both modes of operation can be used with little effort involved. So the decision in favour of Merlin Technology was very easy. I especially like the switch-over feature from winter to summer mode,” says Prodinger based on first experience values. “From a test run we performed when the system was put into operation, we know that we can achieve 10k cooling.”

Reduced energy input
Prodinger expects that the Merlin ORBIT WING® system will improve energy efficiency. “The amount of energy needed to cool the air should be largely covered by adiabatic cooling, so this should be a very low-priced energy source. With regard to sustainability and cost control, this is an opportunity to reduce the energy input for cooling – especially when combined with ventilation. When choosing technology, we attach ever more importance to life-cycle costs, and this is one more reason for using the Merlin system,” explains the project leader Building Technology of Porsche Immobilien GmbH.

Simply comprehensive
The simple installation design and further features also speak in favour of the Merlin ORBIT WING® system, according to Prodinger. “The system is equipped with comprehensive on-board functions. Aspects such as water hygiene, legionella bacteria prevention and a simple embedding into a central regulatory environment are also covered. And the pre-defined control features even allow for easy upgrading of the system,” Prodinger points out.

During the modernisation of the air conditioning systems in the Austria Center Vienna, innovative approaches were taken with the switch from air washers to a high-pressure duct humidification system . "For the number and size of our air conditioning systems, steam humidification would be far too energy-intensive. That's why we decided on a modern high-pressure duct humidification system ," explains Werner Riegler, Head of Facility Management at the Austria Center Vienna. The choice was made to use the patented ORBIT WING® System from Merlin Technology, which already ensures a healthy and constant room climate in Belvedere Palace, the World Museum and Vorderen Zollamtsstrasse. "We became aware of Merlin Technology through a planning office and AN Lüftungsumbau recommended the system to us," says René Neleman, HVAC Team Leader at the Austria Center Vienna.

For 13 years, a merlin® air-humidification system has been in operation at Schösswender, the dining-furniture specialist based in Franking, Upper Austria. After 113,000 operating hours, it is still running perfectly! The fact that only two pumps have been used since 2003 is equally remarkable, given that they have pumped some 7 million litres of water through the system in that time.

Occupational health specialists are raising the alarm! This is due to the fact that breathable air indoors often leaves a lot to be desired. One study on the quality of ambient air in offices confirms that, when air conditioning systems are used, the air produced is generally far too dry.
